I'll be seeing you.

Here we go.

Okay, this is officially my last entry. I've had internet access here at Adoni Guesthouse and questioned whether or not I wanted to give it one last go. My decision is obviously, yes.

I felt it may bring a chuckle of laughter to try and give you a little perspective of the random occurrences that make Africa life ALMOST unbearable ;) Complaining is necessary. Haha.

Yesterday, after only five hours of sleep, Jane and I hitched a ride into Kabremaido town to catch the five am bus to Kampala. After it arrived on what some of us like to call "Africa time", Jane and I were off...at 5:45 am.
It's about an hour into Soroti. There we waited two hours for the bus to "fill up"..Buses and taxi vans wait until their motorcar is filled full before they go. And I mean, WAIT. So, you never know :) After much anticipation, 9:30 rolled around and Jane and I were officially off to Kampala. *Note: I wondered why they kept "reaving" the engine of the bus and why a man was working underneath the front-right tire. WHY they were accepting our money if they were having troubles?? Suggested to Jane maybe we hop over to another bus going to Kampala, but we had already paid. It can be very difficult to get your money back.

YEP, I'm sure you've already guessed what happened. The bus broke down three hours later. At least I FINALLY got to go to the bathroom! I had to go so bad it was becoming painful..
Of course, nobody knows what s going on. The conductor doesn't say. I stormed right out there after thirty minutes of just waiting.."whats going on? do we find another means of transport?" A pipe had broken and they assured me another bus was coming to pick us up. Ha! Empty promises...The "other bus" didn't come. Instead, Teso Coach sent a mechanic to fix the pipe. Two hours later we were off and I had a massive migraine. No food and no water.

Then, right outside of Kampala city it breaks down again. This time it didn't take as long to fix, but I had my fingers crossed the rest of the way! I'm sure they jimmy rigged it some how to get us the rest of the way...Uganda is the perfect description of "order out of chaos."

After a friend picked up Jane and I we dropped her off first. THEN, this friend was begging me to go dancing for my last night in Kampala, "it's all on me!" Hahahahaha! Thats funny. No way. Sarah and Tom had pizza waiting for me here at Adoni. I inhaled it and went strait to bed.

This is just one of the many moments in Africa. I hope you liked that one! I have plenty more...We'll have lots to talk about.

They are truly a unique bunch here in Uganda :)

Well folks, I head out to the airport in about six hours!

See you soon!!!
xoxo

Billie Holiday - I'll Be Seeing You :)

MUAH!

ps - I have to tell you. I listened to this song a few times within the hour long session it took me to shave my legs AND armpits, Ugh. I know. Just thought you'd all like to know that! Ha! Xo

The end of the beginning.

The rain clouds are so thick and dark outside that I’ve had to light my little candle to create some light. Yeah I know the laptop light works, but who knows what could be crawling at a short distance away from me…Frog? Cockroach? It’s six pm and I have an hour to go till the generator creates it for me…I prefer the candlelight.

The rain is pouring here in Africa, right outside my window. The smell is, as described before, indescribable. Better yet, it is officially rainy season and after three major rain pours it is greener than ever. I am proud to say that I’ve witnessed and endured the only two seasons they have here in Uganda. Really hot and really wet. The transformation from hot to cold happened pretty much over night and it was truly magical. However, I can do without the million talking frogs outside my windows every night…EAR PLUGS!

Kylee and Eden have been enjoying the rain as well. They’re anticipating the next rainfall with shampoo and conditioner in hand. Next time they plan on going out with JUST rain boots on. A thorough body wash is hard to come by these days.

“Here I am in the here and now!” is a quote I just read in my latest book borrowing charade. Kylee is certified in “Brain Gym” ??? And I’ve been switching between her Brain Gym book and Nutrition book. My “my book” is almost full with notes about all the cool stuff I’ve learned.

My friends, my trip is coming to an end. This will probably be my last entry before I fly home!

I don’t really have much to say. I am feeling a lot but think it would be best not to even TRY and put it into words for fear that it will not satisfy me enough at this time that I am feeling completely satisfied ;)

I have gained a perspective that I am so thankful for. We are blessed beyond our comprehension. When I think back to the beginning of January when I first arrived up to now, I’m blown away. My work and relationships have so beautifully and naturally fallen into place. Volunteer work has been life changing, dramatic, euphoric, uncomfortable, tough, sweaty, dirty, up, down, left, right and worth every second of my time.

NOW I can say, “I can’t believe how fast it went by!” ;)

Soroti last week…choice of music for an hour-long drive in the middle of Africa…Lady Gaga…”It’s all coming back to me nooowwwwww!” –Celine Dion (for Annika).

One big happy family, I can't wait to see you all :)

One week...

Mackie, Ede’s, Kyle…

From March 7-March13:

THE GENERATOR HAS BEEN BROKEN…AGAIN.

One week. God created the entire world in one week? Kate Hudson manages to fall in love with and subsequently loose a guy in one week (ugh, movie night is getting to me), and friends, Eden Rona and Kylee Gabrielsen and I have gone one week without showering or electricity. You can’t be mad at us or find us disgusting because WE HAVE NO CHOICE.

Every night the girls and I longingly stare up at the ceiling hoping to create light with sheer mind power. Kylee has suggested we start using a windmill type electricity source; only we have someone riding a bike to generate the power (I would gladly take a turn pedaling if it meant Eden wouldn’t light anything else—including another starburst—on fire with the candle). The candles seem to be pure inspiration, although you would not want an emergency to strike while you were relying on its light.

But really though, we have decided that making those friendship bracelets is something the kids can do to generate profit….Trying to get many children to be patient enough to learn how to tie correct knots worked about as well as our generator has. There were kids tying each other together, boys just tying knots, girls dancing with the string, fiends tying the pigeon’s legs together. Not to mention before we did that the poultry club needed help counting chickens in the coop. I’ll help out where and when I can, but when you throw me into a chicken pen and tell me to grab each individual chicken and throw them on the other side of the room while keeping count, I just have to really double and triple think that one over. We were like the afternoon entertainment series. Three White Girls Locked in the Chicken Pen. You seen it? Its been nominated for Oscars. Kids were watching through the wire windows and laughing. Laughing… They are the first one’s up to pedal the bike.

On a lighter note, while sitting in the presence of Eden and Kylee’s impromptu Sunday church lesson at the dining table, they moved onto their Relief Society meeting. This week’s lesson: The Art of Courting Justin Bieber-- as outlined by the Time’s magazine issue dedicated the boy heartthrob. The opening song will be “U Smile”, followed by a quick thought from page 85. An article titled, How to be Justin’s Number One. It reads, I’m pretty flirtatious, but I don’t use any lines. I just get my BIEBER on.” – Justin Bieber. It suffices me to say I witnessed tears fall, feelings were felt, and my disgust with the whole thing was evident J

Happy family,

I’m happy to say that I have very much enjoyed my new friends. My weird, moments of many things including - thinking of nicknames for Marsha (‘Mars’?) Ugh, I FEEL are, thankfully, slowly fading into a what I hope to be a permanent close as I am getting closer to my return. My hair is super long and I really quite like the 2 inch, silvery blonde root re-growth melting thing that is going on right now…I do not on the other hand enjoy the scabs on my crown from the shit shampoo I’ve been using….or lack of showers? Thank god for Thieves oil.

The package that Tom has sent is not here yet. I gave up hope when Jane said that Megs sent her a package once that took 4 months to arrive here in Kabremaido???? So, I’ve moved onto reading Kylee’s online NUTRITION course book.
I have learned how Heart Disease and Diabetes are mostly genetic. Dieting and exercise can “help” from speeding up the process of the disease, but you’re pretty much screwed if it’s in your genes. I have heard that certain Yoga postures can help PREVENTING heart disease...My NEW calling and obsession when I get home…

I love you all and I hope this entry put a smile on your face…It did mine. Thanks Africaaaaaaaa.

Ps - Thanks to Kylee for pointing out and helping me remember all the things that happened this week to make this entry possible…and the laughs shared putting it together/coping some comments from her blog entry? I’M SORRY! My mind is shot.

Song of the week: Summertime

What a drag my last entry was!
I definitely have my ups and downs, but even the downs are valuable learning experience…

My nerves are jerkin’! I’m excited to get home and see you all, however, I know that I am going to miss Africa more than anything…

During prayers with the kids this last Sunday I was looking around at all their faces, realizing how much I’ve come to know them and love them in such a short amount of time. It surprised me that I know ALMOST every child’s name…So many to remember…I love them all so much. You all have to help me when I get home continue to help them. They are amazing and deserve it above and beyond!

Teaching is going well. I love the walk to and from school and to YOUR surprise…even when it’s deathly hot. I’m pretty much used to sweating from every pore and walking through a constant curtain of dust.

I can do ANYTHING after living in Africa for 3 months. What’s next? Everest? Meditating till I have no pulse? You got it.

I keep telling everyone to get ready for my homecoming and even I was thinking the same as you – PARTY! (Well, at least I hope that’s what you were thinking?). Now, I feel the need to warn you...I fear I may take on some of the same characteristics of a returned missionary or some thing. Haha. Thank goodness my little brother (by 19 months) is a freshly returned missionary as of February 18 and we can be weird together! Except I’ll be CLASPING a bottle of red till the death! Some things just never change ;) Love you Walker!

Since the new interns arrived last week I have re connected with white people, I am learning how to have normal conversation again, laughed to the point of tears, watched a movie, ate gummy worms and am now typing on a laptop. I’m a big kid now.

Kylie and Eden are fantastic! I have reminisced my High School years and for the first time in my life I am…possibly looked up to, asking me questions like…never mind…Haha. They are funny and have come at the perfect time. As we speak, Kylie has a Tanda (light therapy for your face) pressed up against her fore head…she’s 18. Haha.

I have read the book I brought 3 times. The continuous instruction of how to achieve my inner peace was an essence driving me mad. I needed to put it down. Kylie lent me a totally mindless book called The Guernsy Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society…
I know. Anyhow, It turned out to be fantastic and is a new favorite. Now…I am bookless, desperately waiting for another book coming in a package from Tom.
In the mean time, to keep busy and sane, I have taken up bracelet making…with string. I am proud to say that I have already made three.

I’ve decided that it would be a great project for the Arts and Crafts Club to learn how to make them. I can bring some home to sale to all of you. We can all be BFF’s with our matching bracelets.
I still love you all!

Song of Week:
Janis Joplin – Summertime

Also, In celebration of Radioheads new album release on Saturday - that I can’t listen to due to lack of technology in Africa – I’m posting one of my favorite Radiohead songs. One I have listened to much while my stay in Africa. Love, love.

Radiohead – Hail to the Theif – There There

Eight Weeks.

Hello everyone!

I'm hitting 8 weeks and FEELING IT. Volunteer work is hard and I'm feeling the crunch time!

I don't have much to say this week. Just know that it's been a crazy one! New interns that are amazing and life savers to me, teaching, teaching, teaching and elections in Uganda....Ugh. Elections have been going on for President, Parliament, the Mayor and local district officials...Uganda is very different when these things are going on. Had to bunker down in Kabremaido before heading into Kampala for the new volunteers. Better to be safe than sorry!!

I hope everybody is happy and well! I miss you all more than words can express....

xoxo

Music Week!

Let the Sun Shine....Africaaaaaaaa.

First - It's music week!! Whoot! Whoot! The generator at the orphanage has been broken for some time and after arriving in Kampala was able to a good charge to my ipod, baby! :)

Kar made me a playlist for my experience here in Africa. She put a song on my playlist that I dedicate to the bar and I just sang it...to myself....for Marsha :) Blast it, do a little dance and have a shot about it for me..

Attention Kar: It was truly amazing when I discovered this little hidden treasure on my ipod. I shed a tear or two :)

Last but, not least...

SONG OF THE WEEK:

It doesn't remind me of anything or anybody...just my existence...I've mastered head stands to keep myself from getting emotional about it EVERY TIME I listen to it...Now it's just every once in a while, if I'm lucky ;)
So...download it, buy it, do whatever just get it and BLAST it wherever you are and think about the fact that I'm in Love with you, okay?

A little bit of Mafrica from me to you :)
heart, me

*U.S. Royalty - Equestrian

LiSt oF ThInGs I LoVe:

1.Bathroom breaks on a 10 hour bus ride in Africa..."Boys this way! Girls this way!" Squatting next a 100 year old African woman...priceless.

2.The comment, "You look very Smart.." Pretty? Good? Hansom?

3.When I am grading my learners papers in the office with Grace (Director of the school). She blasts the hip hop/rap station on the FM radio. There's kids standing around and we're rockin' out to Lil' Wayne. I wonder if they're English is clever enough to pick up on the vulgar remarks...? Haha. Thank you, Africa!

4.Jane and I were waiting at the bus stop in Soroti the other day. Two little girls were being rascals running all around us, "Auntie! Aunties!" One of the little girls stopped, starred at me for a moment and said, "you have eyes like for dolls." - I think doll eyes are kinda creepy looking but, it was a one of kind compliment :)

Some Things I Do:
-Organize my stuff.
-Sit in my room and eat chocolate.
-Still obsessed with bag balm.
-Work on my cross word puzzle book (i can do a whole crossword puzzle in 8 min.)
-Sweat
-Sweat some more...

Update:

I have been vacationing in the big city of Kampala enjoying running water, electricity, and unlimited internet access for a few days. Jane and I picked up 2 volunteers at the airport last night. They are fantastic! 18 years and so alive and ready for the experience of they're life. I have a feeling that they are going to be great examples to the children, and too me. It's been to fun and interesting to see them as I was when I first arrived in Africa. I didn't realize how immune to everything I have become until we trekked out today into the downtown areas for some materials for the clubs I'm working on.

For those who know me....We drove by a pack of dogs that had died, somehow. They didn't look like they had been hit by cars. Maybe starved? They were piled up on the side of the road. I barely noticed them. Eden asked me, "Did you see that?!" She was so shocked and sad. I replied, "Yeah," with no real intense emotional reaction that I would normally have, or used to. It got me thinking...because that's all I do, right? It's not that I didn't care. It's just that when you realize that some things are just the way they are you go deeper...You crave to dig deeper within yourself for a clarity that takes an understanding beyond whats real. Or not real? It feels great when I have moments of clarity..It comes and goes. I want to feel that way all the time. I can already see it happening with the girls. It's amazing to me how we naturally do this as a human being. We were created to Love.

Shut up.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha.....

Alright I gotta go, team.
I love you all!
